Challenge: Design and build steps that compliment the landscape and will last.
Solution: We created wood steps out of (ground contact rated) pressure treated 2 x 4's turned on end. Each tread (about 18" deep x 40" wide) is held together with (3) 1/4-20 stainless steel threaded rod. The orientation of the boards allows them to expand and contract with humidity changes easily along their flatsawn wood grain without stressing the wood. Each board is spaced with a 1/4" stainless steel spacer to allow drainage. The treads are supported by a stainless steel framework set in (3) concrete post holes. The framework will last indefinitely and the treads can easily be replaced in 20 - 30 years if necessary.
