Creating a walkable platform across the slate roof to keep workers from walking on and destroying the slate.
One of our homeowner clients replacing/fixing his own roof. The old slate roof leaked badly because it was walked upon and the "fixers" then caulked the seams. Water finds the easiest path first. Never caulk the seams on a slate roof, and never walk on the slate.
There was flashing at the pitch transition on the previous roof. We suggested instead of simply replacing the flashing, that he build a walkway at the pitch transition so he (and future workers) could move across the roof without ever stepping on and destroying the slate. These photos show how he built the new walkway.
Of course, we are thrilled to see homeowners fix their own roofs, and do it safely as well! The slate came from North Country Slate and the anchor is our V-5 permanent anchor. Fall protection gear from Petzl.
