It's attention to details that make projects successful.  We custom make and test fit all our flashing pieces before embedding them in mortar.  This specific counter-flashing design naturally keeps water away from the vulnerable locations.  It also requires zero sealant and/or fasteners ... eliminating two more potential failure spots.

Note from the Founder:

What you build today (if done really well) will bring joy to you and many others for a long, long time.
Every part of a building should be noticed for its beauty, its function, ... or sometimes even better, not noticed at all because its doing its job perfectly.

We enjoy working with picky, detail oriented, solution driven clients.  Please browse our photos and links below.  Our construction/renovation projects are focused in Lynchburg, Virginia.  If you're project is unique and challenging enough, we might travel a bit further.  We've been working by referrals only for ages and keep a back log of work, so please plan ahead if you'd like us to help you with your special project.  Thanks!

Little details add up to big differences, and satisfied clients.

The stainless steel support shaft for the outside corner of the gutter (photo above) will never be seen, but will keep the corner strong and straight for the life of the gutter.

By using the OJ eve jig (shown below) every member of the team creates the same perfect repeatable detail ... every time.

SLATE ROOF RESTORATION

Picture
BEFORE
Picture
AFTER
Slate roofs are ruined first by the slate "walkers" who crack and break slate, then the slate "caulkers" who seal in the moisture with roof tar and caulk, forcing it to find a way into the home.  Our project scope is shown below.  The new slate is from our friends at North Country Slate in Canada.
  • Fix leaks at roof transitions.
  • Replace rear roof and hand-cut all curved slate to match original slate on the house.
  • Design and build "slate" steps for rear roof access without ever walking on the slate.
  • Add V-5 permanent roof anchor for fall protection.
  • Design and build a fully supported "walkable" and easily "removable" sectional ridge cap.
  • Remove 2 leaking plumbing stacks on the side and consolidate them into our single stainless steel vent stack on the rear.

Gutters matter.

Water made the Grand Canyon.
Control your water flow.  Control your building's life expectancy.

We slope our gutters 1/16"-1/8" to each zero threshold downspout opening.
We install gutter hangers into solid wood (rafters or blocking installed behind the fascia) on 16"-24" centers.
Rain flushes most debris down the downspout and the gutters dry out ...
instead of becoming mosquito havens.

Here, we removed the spotty "handyman" repairs and leaking hidden gutters on this home,
fixed the rotten soffits and rafters,
extending and re-sheathed the roof,
installed 5 permanent anchors for safe maintenance,
added continuous perimeter blocking with new fascia,
installed a new upper roof,
rebuilt the porch roofs and installed traditional double lock VM Zinc to match the gutters,
installed new Nordic Steel half round gutters to eliminate their water problems,
... and much more.

DRIVING PRINCIPLES OF OUR DAILY SUCCESS
  • Provide a safe working environment.
  • Be creative in problem solving.
  • Observe what doesn't work, as well as what does.  Remember them both,  and apply that knowledge.
  • Clearly communicate multiple solutions when presenting problems.
  • Always respect the client's environment by keeping it clean.
  • Take care of difficult problems while they are still easy.  - Lao Tzu

The new VM zinc standing seam roof will patina slightly darker over time, and restores the home's character.
Although there's quite a demand for painted metal roofs (and oddly ... roofs with exposed fasteners), we choose to install only metals that never require paint and use a traditional double-lock standing seam style.
Paint fades.  Paint peels.  We prefer roofs that patina instead.
We also work with copper and stainless steel materials.
A little drip in the wrong place, over a long time ... can collapse a building.
Getting the details right takes more time up front, but keeps this from happening on your building.

Walkways at Transitions.
Walkable platforms built into the slate roof pitch transitions helps keep foot traffic off of the slate roof.
It's safer and will help the slate roof last its full natural life expectancy of 100+ years instead of being ruined by "slate walkers" in 25 years.
Each person is unique.  Their home reflects this in the little details, such as custom gable vents.
Here, we made a custom stainless steel gable vent to match the stainless double lock standing seam porch roof.  The the Vermont green slate and rusting interior framework will give the home the "ocean" feel the homeowner desires.
