Note from the Founder:

What you build today (if done really well) will bring joy to you and many others for a long, long time.
Every part of a building should be noticed for its beauty, its function, ... or sometimes even better, not noticed at all because its doing its job perfectly.

We enjoy working with picky, detail oriented, solution driven clients.  Please browse our photos and links below.  Our construction/renovation projects are focused in Lynchburg, Virginia.  We work almost completely by referrals and keep a back log of work, so please plan ahead if you'd like us to help you with your special project.  Thanks!

We also frequently travel all over the USA (especially on the East Coast) for fall protection consultations, Slator brand permanent roof anchor installations, roof anchor designs and safe access solutions.  Contact us if you would like help.

SLATE ROOF RESTORATION

Picture

This roof was ruined first by the slate "walkers" who crack and break slate, then the slate "caulkers" who seal in the moisture, forcing it to find a way into the home.  Our project scope is shown below.  The new slate is from our friends at North Country Slate in Canada.
  • Fix leaks at roof transitions.
  • Replace rear roof and hand-cut all curved slate to match original slate on the house.
  • Design and build "slate" steps for rear roof access without ever walking on the slate.
  • Add V-5 permanent roof anchor for fall protection.
  • Design and build a fully supported "walkable" and easily "removable" sectional ridge cap.
  • Remove 2 leaking plumbing stacks on the side and consolidate them into our single stainless steel vent stack on the rear.

gutters matter

Water made the Grand Canyon.
Control your water flow.  Control your building's life expectancy.

Function first.
Aesthetics second.
Heads turning ... third.

Our favorite gutter are half-round Nordic Steel half-round gutters.
We slope them 1/16"-1/8" to each zero threshold downspout opening.
We install gutter hangers into solid wood (rafters or blocking installed behind the fascia) on 16"-24" centers.

Rain flushes most debris down the downspout and the gutters dry out ... instead of becoming mosquito havens.
We put minimal fasteners into the downspout system so there is less chance of debris getting hung up.
This requires nicely tight diagonals.  The photo below provides the formula we use.
It will make your great work simpler.

DRIVING PRINCIPLES OF OUR DAILY SUCCESS
  • Provide a safe working environment.
  • Be creative in problem solving.
  • Observe what doesn't work, as well as what does.  Remember them both,  and apply that knowledge.
  • Clearly communicate multiple solutions when presenting problems.
  • Always respect the client's environment by keeping it clean.
  • Take care of difficult problems while they are still easy.  - Lao Tzu

The new VM zinc standing seam roof will patina slightly darker over time, and restores the home's character.
Although there's quite a demand for painted metal roofs (and oddly ... roofs with exposed fasteners), we choose to install only metals that never require paint and use a traditional double-lock standing seam style.
Paint fades.  Paint peels.  We prefer roofs that patina instead.
We also work with copper and stainless steel materials.

Walkable platforms built into the slate roof pitch transitions helps keep foot traffic off of the slate roof.
It's safer and will help the slate roof last its full natural life expectancy of 100+ years instead of being ruined by "slate walkers" in 25 years.
Blue Glass, LLC is a Class A Contractor in Lynchburg, Virginia and has been helping homeowners, business owners, and congregations solve challenging problems since 2003.  Over ninety percent of our work comes from referrals.

Details matter, and they last.
We designed, made, and installed this gable vent to compliment the structure and roof lines on this 100+ year old home.
This gable end and porch roof (once complete) will look almost the exact same for the next 100 years.
Roof:  Roofinox (stainless steel) double-lock standing seam.
Siding (being installed):  Vermont green slate.
Gable vent:  Custom stainless steel design perimeter and welded "aging" stained glass interior.
Anchor in.  Live long.
